DnD 5e WikiDot

Updated: May 6, 2020

It's a curse... I say to myself, "Mike... I will only buy the D&D books that I really need as a resource or for running an adventure"... but... like so many of you, I end up buying them all! And if you're like me, you buy them in multiple formats. I have them in print, as well as for FantasyGrounds and DnD Beyond. Which means that I have purchased every book almost three times over. And that's just for 5th edition!

And it is GREAT to have all of the information that you could ever need at your disposal but while it might be at your disposal, it's not at your fingertips. I'm sure this has happened to you... you want to look up a certain race/class/monster and you find yourself having to remember which book it's in and then inevitably get it wrong on the first guess and then having to move to another book to search for what you want. First world problems, I know... but a problem none-the-less.

Now, DnD Beyond does fix this problem by having any content that you have purchased available from one search bar... BRILLIANT! But what if you don't have the content purchased?

And this is where the DnD WIkidot comes in...

What is a WikiDot?

A Wiki is collaborative website that allows users to create and modify content around any given topic. The biggest and most well known Wiki has to be Wikipedia. It has a collaborative group of over 130,000 users that have collectively created over 6 million articles! WikiDot is a website that allows you to create your own Wiki on any topic that you want.

What is a DnD WikiDot and Why Use It?

So... the easy and obvious answer is that it is a Wiki about Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. These Wiki Websites contain a ton of information about D&D Races, Classes, Spells, and so on. You can search the Wiki for what you want or use the relatively easy navigation menu to look your information. It is SUPER HANDY to have a one stop shop for all the information you could need when making a character or hunting for spell descriptions during a game.

With the exception of 5e Rules, these Wiki Sites are pretty much a one stop shop for all of your D&D informational needs!

There are TWO DnD WikiDots of Note...

The first can be found at http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/ and the second can be found at http://dnd5ed.wikidot.com/. Notice that the only difference between the two in the address is the dnd5e vs. dnd5ed. The first Wiki (dnd5e) has no real name other than DnD 5th Edition Community Wiki while the other is called DrakanShadow's D&D 5th Edition Wiki.

Which one should you use?

The short answer is to use DrakanShaow's WIki for reasons I will provide below...

DrakanShadow has ...

MORE INFORMATION than the other 5th Edition Wiki

  • A clear example of this is when you look at the Races section for both sites. Check out the images below to compare the two. DrakanShadow is the first image. Click to enlarge the photos.

The Other Wiki (Click to Enlarge)

  • While the Other Wiki is not bad for layout, it wastes a ton of page space with icons for each section which then has the remainder of the information jammed into the rest of the page. This makes the page longer and harder to take in on one page. You can use the images above to see an example of this. DrakanShadow has more information on the page and does it in much less space.

  • DrakanShadow has better colour contrast on the website which makes the words easier to read. Once again, see the images above for an idea of what I am talking about.

  • Also, the formatting for the articles are easier to read. A prime example of this in the difference in the level progression tables. See below for examples and click to enlarge. DrakanShadow is the first example.

Now don't get me wrong, the other DnD WikiDot is also well done. It has much of the information that DrakanShadow does and the layout is not horrible. However, if I were to only be able to choose one, or if I had to choose one and have the best bet that I will find what I want, then I would choose DrakanShadow.

Let me know in the comments below if there is a DnD Wiki that I am missing. Also, let me know what you think of the two WikiDots. Am I right in my choice? Let me know!
